CAL Celebrates State Lawmakers Will Shelve Effort to Expand Gambling

In a resounding victory for Christian values and the well-being of North Carolina communities, the Christian Action League is elated to announce that the North Carolina House and Senate leadership have decided to abandon legislation aimed at expanding gambling in our state for this year.

“Now that plans have been shelved to authorize casinos in rural counties and thousands of video lottery terminals across the state, the integrity of our communities will be prioritized over the allure of quick revenue,” said Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League. “This decision is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy and the commitment of many lawmakers to the core values that make our state a beacon of morality and responsible governance. The Christian Action League extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who stood firm in opposing this harmful initiative.”

Here are some key points highlighting why the Christian Action League is relieved by this decision:

1. Casinos and video poker are proven magnets for addiction, crime, and social instability. This decision safeguards our families and communities from the devastating consequences of gambling-related problems, such as addiction, family breakdowns, and financial ruin.

2. The idea that casinos would bring economic prosperity to rural areas is a false promise. History has shown that the economic benefits of gambling are typically skewed, with most jobs in the industry being low-wage positions. Moreover, local businesses often suffer as consumer spending shifts to the casino, undermining the true economic health of the community.

3. Gambling establishments can erode a community’s traditional character, associating it more with gambling than with its original cultural identity. We believe in preserving the unique heritage of North Carolina’s rural areas, which should not be overshadowed by the presence of casinos.

4. Gambling conflicts with fundamental community values, particularly in areas where it is viewed as a vice and a moral issue. We commend the many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who recognized these concerns and chose to push back against the strong forces that would either purposely or inadvertently undermine the moral fabric of our state.

5. Relying on gambling revenue can make our state vulnerable to economic fluctuations, such as those caused by natural disasters or changing tourism trends. A diversified and stable economy is vital for the long-term well-being of our citizens.

The Christian Action League would like to extend its appreciation to Governor Roy Cooper, Senate and House Democrats, and the courageous Republicans who stood up against the leadership’s plans to prioritize gambling over the interests of the people.

We urge all citizen Christians to stay vigilant and help us continue to support policies that reflect our state’s best values and principles.
