Help Stop Effort in Congress for Proposed Catawba Indian Casino in North Carolina

Christian Action League
December 15, 2015

CasinoFor two years the Christian Action League has been working alongside the Kings Mountain Awareness Group (KMAG) and StopCatawbaCasino.com to build a coalition of citizens in King’s Mountain and Cleveland County that would keep out a proposed Las Vegas-style Catawba Indian Casino. We’ve had much success in that endeavor.

Adam Forcade, Head of KMAG, now says it’s clear that in spite of all the spin about the Casino’s promises of economic prosperity, their “community does not support casino gambling.” In fact, the last election for the Kings Mountain Town Council in many respects was a referendum on the issue. Voters turned out casino supporters for new members who are anti-casino.

It appears, however, Casino interests may now be desperate. According to information the Christian Action League received today, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham is proposing language in the Omnibus Appropriations Bill that would make it easier for the Catawba Indian Nation to build their Casino in spite of the growing opposition in Kings Mountain.

The US Senate is slated to vote on this measure as early as tomorrow. That’s why your prompt action is critical!!!

The tribe continues trying to convince the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to take a parcel of land (located just outside of Kings Mountain) into trust on their behalf. If they succeed, a major hurdle in their plan to erect a 220,000 square foot gambling casino along the I-85 corridor, just west of Charlotte, will be cleared. Although we have not seen the language, we think this is likely to be what the provision in the legislation is about – removing some of the current standards required by the Bureau – standards the Catawba tribe cannot currently meet.

Dr. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League, said, “If we don’t wake up to the insidious nature of the vice of gambling, I’m convinced we will have a whole new generation lost to gambling’s negative impact. Constantly it impoverishes its victims spiritually, morally and financially while making slaves of some people for life. Not to understand legalized commercial gambling and to be silent in the face of its progression is in itself to gamble with our future.”

TAKE CHRISTIAN ACTION:

Please contact both North Carolina’s U.S. Senators immediately and ask that they oppose any effort to allow the Catawba Indian Nation to build a Casino in North Carolina.

Senator Richard Burr (R-NC): 202.224.3154

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC): 202.224.6342

Please call right away.
