As states continue to legalize sports betting, the Christian Action League is sounding the alarm over a concerning uptick in gambling addiction cases. Hotlines dedicated to addressing gambling addiction are witnessing a surge in callers, particularly among younger demographics, with men in their 20s and 30s being disproportionately affected.
“This surge in gambling addiction is deeply troubling,” remarked the Christian Action League’s executive director, Reverend Mark Creech. “It reflects a dangerous trend that we foresaw with the legalization of sports betting. The consequences of this decision are dire, especially for our youth.”
North Carolina, in line with this trend, recently legalized mobile sports betting, coinciding with major sporting events like the ACC basketball tournament and March Madness. However, the immediate aftermath has been alarming, with nearly $200 million wagered in the state within the first week alone. While lottery officials celebrate these figures, the Christian Action League raises serious concerns about the societal impact.
Rev. Creech reiterated his longstanding opposition to gambling, emphasizing its corrosive effect on societal values. “The rush of winning in gambling has been likened to the effect of illegal drugs,” he stated. “We must recognize that this industry preys on vulnerability, particularly among our youth. The pervasive advertising associated with online sports gambling is akin to unleashing an epidemic of child gambling.”
Moreover, Rev. Creech underscored the importance of greater awareness and vigilance. “We cannot overlook the real harm caused by virtual transactions and the detachment it fosters,” he warned. ” Avoiding the negative consequences of gambling requires more than self-imposed limits; it demands a fundamental shift in societal attitudes towards this vice.”
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) estimates that approximately 2-3% of adults in the United States, or around 5-8 million individuals, suffer from a gambling disorder. This includes both those with a diagnosed gambling addiction and those with problematic gambling behavior that may not meet the clinical criteria for addiction but still experience negative consequences.
The impact of problem gambling extends beyond just the individuals directly affected. Research suggests that for each person struggling with a gambling disorder, several others may be negatively impacted, including family members, friends, colleagues, and communities. The NCPG estimates that, on average, each person with a gambling problem affects between 5 to 10 other individuals. This means that the total number of people negatively impacted by problem gambling in the United States could range from approximately 25 to 80 million individuals, considering the estimated 5-8 million people with gambling disorders. These impacts can include financial strain, emotional distress, relationship problems, and broader societal costs associated with addiction and its consequences.
“Pastors, evangelists, and other clergy are to be like shepherds over God’s sheep. Clergy have a responsibility to address issues that affect the spiritual, moral, and social well-being of their congregations and communities. They must endeavor to protect them from the wolves of the gambling enterprise, as well as the legislative leaders who want to see more gambling for the sake of state revenues,” argued Rev. Creech. “I can tell you, lawmakers in our state are not through with gambling legislation, legislative leadership is entirely too friendly with the industry and too cowardly to stand up to them.”

Creech reiterated the Christian Action League’s steadfast commitment to promoting values of honesty, integrity, and stewardship. “While the allure of gambling may be exciting, true fulfillment in life can only be found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” he emphasized. “Those who walk in faith can attest that a life lived in alignment with Christian principles is rich with purpose, fulfillment, and never boring.”
