Meet John the ‘Non-Denominational’

By Jeff Larson, The Back Pew

“The late evangelist Billy Sunday used to tell this story to audiences of various denominations. He said that he was in Duluth, Minnesota, when a Jewish man was run over in an iron mine. They rushed him to a Catholic hospital where an Episcopalian surgeon amputated his leg. A Presbyterian nurse who worked there felt sorry for the man. Hence, she advertised in a Congregationalist paper for a wooden leg for the Jew whose leg had been amputated by the Episcopalian in the Catholic hospital.

“As Providence would have it, a Methodist woman read the Presbyterian ad in the Congregational paper and remembered that her husband, who had died a Baptist, had left behind a wooden leg. So she contacted the Salvation Army, which sent an emissary to the Methodist women’s home to pick up the Baptist leg.

“They took the woman’s leg to the express office and gave it to an Evangelical nurse. She carried it upstairs, strapped it on the Jewish man, and made of him a United Brethren.

“Life’s most important question is not to which church or religion you belong. Instead, it’s, have you turned away from your sins and personally received Christ as your Redeemer? You can be a member of the church and still not enter heaven. The church is one thing, and it’s crucial, but only Christ saves. Do you know Him? Have you asked Him to save you?”
